At a news conference Saturday at the White House Rose Garden, President Trump announced that he would nominate Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the US Supreme Court. Trump spoke affectionately about the appellate judge before introducing a brief statement.

  • Trump nominates Amy Coney Barrett as Supreme Court replacement for Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
  • Barrett praised Ginsburg’s long-standing friendship with another late judge, Antonin Scalia.
  • Barrett briefed reporters Saturday. She spoke fondly of Justice Ginsburg, calling her “an inspiration to all of us.”

The Direct Process

“It should be a direct and immediate confirmation,” the president said. “It simply came to our notice then. It has to be very quick. I hope it’s not too controversial, “he said, with a hint of contradiction.” We said last, didn’t we? ” This comment is now a reference to the hearings confirmed by Supreme Court Judge Brett Kavanagh.

In 2018, Senate Kavanagh’s appointment was confirmed by a paper thinner, broadcast live despite protests against his appointment and controversial investigations.

At the trial, the judge charged Dr Christine Blasey Ford, a former classmate of Kavanaugh, with sexually abusing her as a teenager. The whole trial turned out to be a pivotal moment in the #TimesUp movement, which demanded that men who abuse their power over women should no longer be rewarded.

However, the coming battle for Barrett’s stabilization will be even more intense.

When Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg died almost two weeks ago, political leaders immediately launched a war of words surrounding the possibility of replacing her before the November 3 election.

That explosion occurred because in February 2016, Republicans, led by Senator Mitch McConnell, refused to hold a referendum confirming Obama-appointed Judge Merrick Garland.

At the time, they argued, the American people had a say in the process, so confirmation should be delayed after the election.

But this time, McConnell wasted some time after Ginsburg’s death, revealing that he would not use the same standard in this matter. Instead, Senate Republicans will try to stabilize Barrett five weeks before the general election, although it could overthrow the Republican Senate majority and presidency.

Barrett briefed reporters Saturday. She spoke fondly of Justice Ginsburg, calling her “an inspiration to all of us.”

Also, Amy Coney Barrett praised Ginsburg’s long-standing friendship with another late judge, Antonin Scalia. Although their views on the law often sit at opposite ends of the political spectrum and become the symbol of the right before Scalia’s death and the legend of the left in Ginsburg, the two judges are truly close friends.

Barrett, who served as Scalia’s secretary during her early career, said the friendship between the two judges represented our country very well.

“These two great Americans have proven that arguments, even in the face of great consequences, do not need to destroy relationships,” Barrett said.

She continued to praise the heritage of Scalia. “His judicial philosophy is mine,” she said. “A judge must use the law as it is written. Judges should not be policy makers. ”

More about Judge Amy Coney Barrett

Like Scalia, Barrett is a devout Catholic. Some liberal critics fear that his religious leanings, including opposition to abortion, will affect his judicial decisions. The Supreme Court case that affirmed a woman’s right to choose abortion was filed by Roe V Wade. Both Capitol Hill Republicans and Democrats have warned that it could block Trump’s candidacy if it is confirmed.

However, Barrett’s history as a judge is very brief, so there are only so many cases to understand how she will judge in the High Court. Trump-appointed her in 2017 to the US Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. Before that, she taught law at the University of Notre Dame for nearly 15 years, where she earned her law degree.

Barrett is 48 years old, which means that if confirmed, she could serve four decades on the Supreme Court because the country’s Supreme Court rules do not have an expiration date. Barrett hails from Metairie, Louisiana and currently lives in South Bend, Indiana with her husband and large, diverse family.

Trump pointed to his modern family as a symbol of history. Amy Coney Barrett would be the first mother of children of high school age to serve at the Supreme Court if confirmed. The judge and her husband, Jesse Barrett, have seven children under the age of 20. Two of their children from Haiti were adopted, one with down syndrome.
