Burna Boy, a Nigerian singer, won his third Best International Act Award at the 2021 BET Awards on 27 June.



KAMPALA | LIFESTYLE UGANDA — On 27 June, Nigerian singer Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, aka Burna Boy, won the BET Best International Act Award for the third year in a row.
The ‘Kilometre’ singer won his third Best International Act Award at the 2021 BET Awards in Los Angeles on 27 June, beating out Wizkid, Aya Nakamura, Tanzanian singer Diamond Platnumz and other nominees.
Following its virtual run in 2020 due to COVID-19 concerns, the BET Awards returned to a live show format from the Microsoft Theatre as of this year’s edition. Hosted by Taraji P. Henson, the event was titled The Year of the Black Woman.
Burna Boy also expressed gratitude to his mother, Bose Ogulu, who has traditionally received the award on his behalf and whose BET Award speeches have appeared on both Burna Boy’s previous albums.

“I made it this time to collect my award myself,” Burna Boy joked, taking aim at not being onstage to get trophies from the BET Awards in the past.
“I’m onstage to receive my award this time,” Burna Boy said while joking about never being at his BET awards before.
His 2021 BET win totes on top of his growing list of musical accomplishments, which includes his historic Grammy win at the 63rd edition of music’s biggest ceremony earlier this year.
In the meantime, Burna Boy will take to the road once again this year with his Space Drift World Tour, which will encompass stops in the United States, the UK, France, Finland, Spain, and Portugal.
Bree Runway won the BET Viewers’ Choice: Best New International Act Award beating out Nigerian singer Tems and South Africa’s Elaine.

Megan Thee Stallion won both the Best Female Hip Hop Artist Video and the Best Collaboration categories, as well as the Viewers’ Choice Award for 2020’s Savage (Remix) with Beyoncé.
Queen Latifah, who has been a pioneer of hip hop, won the Lifetime Achievement Award. Jazmine Sullivan took home the Album of the Year Award for Heaux Tales.
DMX was also remembered at this year’s BET Awards with a special tribute set that featured Busta Rhymes, Method Man, and Swizz Beatz performing some songs from his posthumous album, Exodus.
