Bill Gates and Melinda Gates announced their separation after 27 years together, stating in a joint statement that they “no longer believe we can thrive together as a couple in this next stage of our lives.”
During his years as the founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates leveraged his fortune to form the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation with his wife Melinda Gates in 2000.
Since its founding, the Gates Foundation has grown to become one of the most prominent charitable foundations in the world, with an endowment in excess of $50 billion.
At Microsoft Bill had resigned, in 2000, as CEO, a full-time employee, and as a member of the company’s board in order to devote himself more fully to philanthropy.
Formerly, Melinda was the marketing manager at Microsoft in charge of launching several software releases until she left the company in 1996.
The Gates’ separation will not have much of an impact on the Gates Foundation, since they both believe in the foundation’s mission and will continue their work together regardless of their separation.
The Gates Foundation is led by Mark Suzman, while both Bill Gates and his wife Melinda are trustees, along with multi-billionaire Warren Buffett.
