The Brit Awards are the British Phonographic Industry’s (BPI) annual pop music awards. The name was originally a shortened form of ‘British Record Industry Trust’, an industry association founded in 1931 to represent the interests of record manufacturers and distributors.

The award ceremony was first broadcasted by ITV on 15 February 1977 and has been streamed live on YouTube since 2013. The awards are presented annually by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), an umbrella body representing the UK record industry.

Since 2011, the awards have been officially known as the BRIT Awards. The ceremony is held in a different city each year and is broadcast live on regional television stations across Europe and Australia.
