This year’s Africa Day celebrations will run under the theme Silencing the Guns and will highlight the achievements of the former organization that spawned the African Union, the Organisation of African Unity.
It is a two-week campaign that will involve the AU’s youth division within the Women, Gender and Youth Directorate, encouraging users to post on TikTok about what makes them proudly African across categories, including music.
TikTok Africa will program a line-up of in-app initiatives to promote African content with genre-specific playlists, such as Amapiano, Afrobeats and Gengetone.

Lady Zamar, MFR Souls, Cassper Nyovest, Mi Casa’s J’Something, K.O and Moonchild Sanelly are among the South African artists whose songs will be featured in the #IAmAfrican campaign.
All videos that use a song from the playlists and include the official #IAmAfrican hashtag will be considered for an appearance on Trace TV in May.
The success of the campaign depends on its amplification through the 55 member states of the AU to generate interest and capture young people’s perceptions and identities relating to the theme and share shared commentary.
“With initiatives like the #IamAfrican campaign, TikTok plays a critical role in promoting music, elevating the prominence of African talent, and bringing people together around the world.”
