At the Oscars 2021 in Los Angeles, Daniel Kaluuya, 32, won the best supporting actor for his role in Judas and the Black Messiah.

  • The list of Oscar 2021 winners includes Daniel Kaluuya as Best Supporting Actor.
  • During his acceptance speech, Kaluuya commended his mother and the man he played.
  • The actor has also starred in Widows and Black Panther; his next project is Barney & Friends.
  • Visit the Lifestyle Uganda homepage for more stories like this.

The 32-year-old British actor, whose career rose to international fame after receiving the award for his performance in Jordan Peele’s Get Out, was the heavy favourite for the top award, having previously taken the best actor award at the Golden Globes and the Baftas.

In his acceptance speech, Kaluuya first thanked God – “We cannot be here without your guidance and protection”, before thanking his mother (who “set the factory settings for me to perform.”) and offering praise for the character he played, Fred Hampton.

During his acceptance speech, Kaluuya commended his mother and the man he played, Fred Hampton: “What a man, how blessed we are to live in a lifetime where he existed.” When the American empire played divide and conquer, we declare unite and ascend.

Also, he added: “I am grateful for you showing me myself, and there is so much work to be done — everyone in the room must do it. This isn’t an individual project. It takes all of us together. We have work to do.”

The film, directed by Shaka King, tells the story of the betrayal of leading Chicago Black Panther Fred Hampton by FBI informant William O’Neal (Lakeith Stanfield, a previous Best Supporting Actor Award nominee) in the late 1960s.

Aside from appearing in Widows and Black Panther, Kaluuya is currently preparing to work on Barney & Friends, which he is also producing. According to Kaluuya, the film will “surprise audiences and subvert expectations”.
