Although the FDA released a list of hazardous hand sanitizers in June, it has already updated the advice. The regulator now warns against the use of any sanitizer containing methanol, which can be toxic when absorbed by the skin.
As a result, their list has now grown to about 90 hand purifiers.
Why is the list growing?
At the onset of the epidemic, stores cannot keep hand sanitizers on the shelves. Attracting all the cleaners that people can find, which soon led to a national shortage. Amazon even sold out of it. But the demand for sanitizer is high.

As a result, many distilleries took the lead in the production of liquor and the production of hand-washing alcohol.
This is why you may have noticed the difference in late hand cleaners. You may find that they are more runny or watery. But the most noticeable difference is the odour, which is more intense and more alcohol than before.
This is because alcohol distilleries have to make progress in the Sloptash effort to meet consumer demand.
Of course, this comes with consequences. Some hand sanitizers now contain chemicals that can be dangerous to your body. That is why the FDA is closely monitoring this issue.
Beware of methanol
In a statement, the FDA said that “it works proactively with the producer to retrieve products.” Also, the company calls upon consumers to “stop using all FDA-listed hand sanitizers as dangerous products immediately.

But if you have recently purchased a hand cleaner, make sure it does not contain methanol.
The FDA warns that the toxic chemical could lead to blindness, cardiovascular effects, damage to the central nervous system, hospitalization or death.
Just last month, three people died in New Mexico, one blind after drinking a hand-washing machine containing methanol. Three more were in critical condition. (Of course, you should never drink hand sanitizer, no matter what the ingredients are!) Either way, it proves just how dangerous toxins can be.
