A 12-member jury has convicted Gihslaine Maxwell on five of the six charges she faced, including the most serious charge of sex trafficking a minor. Maxwell faces the rest of her life in prison after the jury has convicted her on five of the six counts she was facing.
Ghislaine Maxwell was found guilty weeks after celebrating her 60th birthday on Christmas, capping a remarkable fall from grace for the Oxford-educated daughter of British publisher Robert Maxwell, who grew up in wealth and privilege alongside royalty.
As Judge Alison Nathan read out the verdicts, she passively sipped water after slowly taking off her mask and removing it. The jury had deliberated for five full days before the verdicts were reached.
In response to the hearing, Bobbi Sternheim, Maxwell’s attorney, said her legal team was already working on an appeal and that they were “confident she will be vindicated.”
Sternheim was disappointed with the verdict despite believing Ghislaine was innocent. “We firmly believe Ghislaine is innocent,” he told reporters outside the courthouse.
There is an upper limit of 40 years in jail for sex trafficking of minors. The lesser charges carry a maximum of five or ten years. Ghislaine Maxwell was found not guilty on one count – enticing a minor to travel for sex acts.
Her sentencing has not been determined yet, but Maxwell is scheduled to return to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn when the trial is completed. She walked out of court into detention as she has done each day of the month-long trial.
Damian Williams welcomed the verdict, noting Maxwell was found guilty of “the worst crimes imaginable-the facilitation and participation in the sexual abuse of children.”
”It has taken a long time to bring Maxwell to justice, but, today, justice has been served,” Williams said in a statement. The crimes against Maxwell date back between 1994 and 2004.
According to two of Epstein’s alleged victims, Maxwell groomed them as young as 14 years old and arranged for them to give massages to Epstein that resulted in sexual activity.
One girl, identified only as “Jane”, described how Maxwell recruited her at summer camp and made her feel “special.” She detailed how sexual encounters with Epstein became routine, with Maxwell sometimes present.
Another, who goes by “Carolyn,” said she received $300 after sexual encounters with Epstein, often from Ghislaine Maxwell herself.
Lastly, Annie Farmer, now 42, alleged that Maxwell fondled her breasts when she was a teenager at Epstein’s ranch in New Mexico.
