In 1995, the Recording Industry of South Africa established the South African Music Awards (often called the SAMAs or SAMAs for short).

Each year, the ceremony is held in late April or May, with the judging process beginning in November of the previous year. The nominations are usually announced at the end of March, and the winners receive a gold-plated statuette.

The award ceremony is a live broadcast on SABC, and most years the show is held at the Super Bowl in Sun City, with three exceptions. The show features live performances by the nominations as well as one-off collaborations.

The SAMA Awards, held in 2020, included thirty different categories.

From year to year, these categories change to reflect changes in music styles and changes in the popularity of already existing genres.

A few of these genres are adult contemporary, Afrikaans, classical, dance, faith, jazz, Kwaito, Maskandi, pop, rap, reggae, RnB, rock, soul and traditional.

Genres are sometimes grouped together based on their popularity among a specific demographic (i.e. Hip Hop, African pop, and Kwaito artists are often grouped together since these genres are popular among South Africans in urban areas).

Artists working in the genres of Gqom and Amapiano will now be given separate categories at the 27th South African Music Awards.

Here’s everything you need to know about the 2021 SAMAs.
