The TikTok App Has Reached 1 Billion Monthly Active Users

A new milestone has been reached by TikTok, which today (September 27) announced it had 1 billion global Monthly Active Users (MAUs).

KAMPALA | LIFESTYLE UGANDA ( — ByteDance, the company that owns the TikTok app, announced on September 27 that the app had over 1 billion monthly active users (MAUs) worldwide.

According to ByteDance, by January 2018, the platform had 55 million global users. That number grew to over 271 million in December 2018 and 507 million in December 2019.

In a blog post published on TikTok’s website, the company states that “more than one billion people around the world come to TikTok to learn, laugh, and discover new things every month”.

On TikTok’s website, a blog post says that “more than 1 billion people around the world use the app each month to be entertained, to learn, to laugh, or to discover something new”.

Based on a leaked B2B pitch deck from October 2020, the TikTok app had 732 million monthly active users (MAUs) around the world, and over 100 million MAUs in the United States alone.

During the lawsuit that TikTok filed against the US government in summer 2020, the startup officially revealed that its global monthly active users (MAUs) stood at 689,174,209 as of the end of July 2020.

TikTok added approximately 43 million MAUs to its global service between the end of July and the end of October 2020 (732m MAUs), which translates to approximately 14.3 million MAUs worldwide every calendar month at this time.

In June 2018, Instagram, one of TikTok’s main competitors, passed the billion unique monthly user mark.

Comparatively, Facebook had 3.51 billion monthly users across its family of apps in the second quarter, an increase from 3.45 billion in the first quarter.

YouTube currently has more than two billion monthly active users, having crossed the one billion mark in 2013, eight years after its launch.

Even though its parent company ByteDance has its headquarters in China, TikTok says that its biggest markets are in the United States, Europe, Brazil, and Southeast Asia.

In a video posted today on TikTok, Chief Operating Officer Vanessa Pappas said: “TikTok’s community is now more than a billion strong.”.

“Now that our TikTok community has reached 1 billion people,” Vanessa Pappas said in a TikTok video released today.

“That means over 1 billion people around the world now visit TikTok to amuse themselves, learn, or discover new content, such as music, art, fashion, DIY and so much more.”

“That means over 1 billion people now use TikTok every month to learn, laugh, or discover something new, like sports music, arts and culture, fashion, DIY, and more.’’
