The 2025 Uganda Rugby Premiership ended in dramatic fashion, with Stanbic Black Pirates defeating Jinja Hippos 44–23 after extra time at Kings Park Arena on 10 May.
Level at 23–23 after 80 minutes, the match went into extra time — a rare occurrence in Ugandan rugby — where the Pirates ran away with three unanswered tries. It was a fitting end to a dominant season in which they topped the table and knocked out defending champions Heathens in the semis.
Despite the loss, the Hippos impressed in their first-ever final, pushing the Pirates to the limit and confirming their status as one of the league’s rising forces.
Hippos’ Historic Journey to the Final
The Jinja Hippos made headlines throughout the season as one of the most dynamic and rapidly improving sides. Finishing third in the regular season, they battled past KOBs in the semi-finals — overturning a first-leg deficit to secure a 49–47 aggregate win and book their first-ever appearance in a top-flight XVs final.
Led by the prolific Yasin Wasswa, who ended the season as one of the league’s top scorers, and the powerful Aziz Bagalana, the Hippos gave the Pirates a stern test in the final but fell just short of their fairytale finish.
The Bigger Picture
Beyond the trophy celebrations, the 2025 season revealed a league on the rise. While the Pirates, Heathens, KOBs, and Hippos remained dominant, while newcomers and mid-tier clubs such as teams like Victoria Sharks, Rhinos, and Walukuba made real strides — upsetting top clubs and drawing growing fanbases.
Across the board, the standard of play improved, with sharper tactics and closer contests, suggesting a continued broadening of talent.
Most notably, fan engagement surged, especially in regions like Jinja and Wakiso, as rugby extended its reach beyond Kampala. This is a testament to initiatives to grow rugby across Uganda and the impact they have.
