Congolese musician Delphin Katembo Vinywasiki, known as Delcat Idengo, was shot dead on Thursday afternoon while filming a music video in Goma, North Kivu.
He had just released a song condemning both the M23 and ADF as occupying forces in the region. Witnesses say he was wearing military fatigues for the video when he was attacked near Kilijiwe. A bullet struck his head, killing him instantly.
His murder comes not long after his release from Munzenze prison, a facility near Goma’s entrance, controlled by AFC/M23 forces.
Idengo was known for his fearless criticism of the government and armed groups. Under President Félix Tshisekedi’s administration, he had been arrested multiple times for his outspoken music. His death has shaken North Kivu, where many saw him as a rare voice of resistance.
The Congolese Ministry of Culture called him a voice of his generation, using music to express the hopes and frustrations of the people.
Some, however, questioned his decision to shoot a video in a conflict zone. A Congolese activist group called his actions reckless, saying, “These rebels are ruthless, and while they must be held accountable, we must be wise when facing armed men.”

Idengo’s killing has reignited debates about the dangers faced by artists and activists who challenge armed groups and government failures. His songs, including Politiciens Escrocs (Crooked Politicians) and Pays des Prisonniers (Country of Prisoners), tackled corruption, war, and misrule.
His murder also comes as M23 rebels tighten their grip on Goma, where they have set up a new government. The group, accused of receiving support from Rwanda, briefly took over the city in 2012 before international pressure forced them to withdraw.
M23 claims to have restored order and promised stability, but Idengo’s death raises serious doubts. Many now fear that outspoken critics will continue to be silenced in a region where speaking out is a deadly gamble.
