The Electoral Commission (EC) has set March 13, 2025, as the date for the Kawempe North by-election. This follows the death of Muhammad Ssegirinya, who passed away earlier this month at Lubaga Hospital after weeks of being hospitalized.
Speaking on Monday at Tick Hotel in Kawempe, EC Chairperson Simon Byabakama outlined the timeline for the election process. The exercise will officially kick off this week across 197 polling stations in the constituency.
Nominations for candidates are set for February 26 and 27, 2025. After that, their papers will be reviewed from February 27 to March 5, and campaigns will run from February 28 until March 11.
Byabakama also reminded those interested in observing the election to seek official approval from the commission. He emphasized the importance of cooperation, saying, “The Commission further welcomes proposals and suggestions aimed at ensuring the conduct of free and fair electoral activities in Kawempe Divisional. The Conduct of Election involves many stakeholders. Adherence to the electoral laws and guidelines by all stakeholders during the entire electoral process is therefore very crucial.”
The by-election will be managed by Henry Makabai, who will act as the returning officer, with Rehema Nassuna as his assistant.
Byabakama urged candidates to keep the peace and discouraged voter bribery. “We are all stakeholders,” he said. “Let us work together to deliver a peaceful, free and fair by-election to the mutual satisfaction of all stakeholders.”
Campaign season is officially on the horizon. Let’s hope the process goes smoothly for everyone in Kawempe North.
