Tems won for her appearance on Future’s ‘Wait For U’ featuring Drake, which also competed for Song of the Year, but lost to Latto’s ‘Big Energy’.
A total of four African representations were also nominated for the 2022 BET Hip Hop Awards, including Burna Boy, Ghana’s Black Sherif, South Africa’s Blxckie, and Zimbabwe’s Nadia Nakai.
A French rapper Benjamin Epps won the Best International Flow category, beating Black Sherif, Black Ckie and Nadia Nakai.
For his work on the visuals for ‘Last Last’, Burna Boy was shortlisted for Video Director of the Year, but lost to Kendrick Lamar and Baby Keem’s ‘Family Ties’.
Additionally, Kendrick Lamar won Album of the Year, Best Live Performer, Artist of the Year, and Best Hip Hop Video awards.
Among other awards, Kendrick Lamar received the award for Artist of the Year, Lyricist of the Year, Best Live Performer, Album of the Year, and Best Hip Hop Video.
Drake scored three wins at the 2022 BET Hip Hop Awards, including Best Collaboration and Best Featured Verse.
On 3 October, the Savoy Hotel in London hosted a ceremony where Tems received the 2022 BMI Impact Award.
She joins other young innovators like Arlo Parks and Raye who have previously received the honor from the UK-based organization of performance rights.
