Vipers SC forward Abubakar Lawal has died in a motor accident on Entebbe Road. He was 29.

The club confirmed his death in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “We are deeply saddened to announce the sudden and untimely passing of our beloved player, Abubakar Lawal, who left us this morning.”

Lawal’s body has been taken for a postmortem, and funeral arrangements will be announced later.

The Nigerian forward joined Vipers SC in July 2022 after a stint with AS Kigali. He played a key role in Vipers’ 2022/23 Uganda Premier League title win, helping them edge out KCCA FC on goal difference. This season, he had made eight league appearances.

News of his passing has sent shockwaves through the Ugandan football community. Tributes have been pouring in from clubs, fans, and journalists.

SC Villa posted, ”Our hearts are heavy as we mourn with @VipersSC, Vipers SC Fans and the entire Ugandan football family over the loss of a true hero of the game. His absence leaves a void that can never be filled. May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may we find solace in the memories he left behind during this heartbreaking time”

NTV Uganda’s Omumuli Gwe’Mizannyo tweeted, ”@VipersSC player Abubaker Lawal has passed on in a motor accident along Entebbe Road. The Nigerian 🇳🇬 player has been part of the club for nearly 3 years.”

URA Football Club also paid tribute, saying, “‘We join Vipers and the entire football family to mourn the passing of Abubaker Lawal. He was a fierce competitor and playing against was an enjoyable challenge. We will keep him in our prayers and mourn with his family. MAY HIS SOUL RIP.”

Mbale Heroes FC added, ”We mourn alongside @VipersSC, their fans, and the Ugandan football community for the loss of a true hero. His absence creates an irreplaceable void. May he rest in peace, and may we cherish the memories he left behind.”

More details will be shared as they come in.
