Renowned Ugandan saxophonist Isaiah Katumwa has returned home ahead of the 2025 edition of the dfcu Jazz in the Pearl Festival, where he is set to share the stage with some of the genre’s biggest names.

After a relatively quiet period during which he occasionally released music online, Katumwa’s reappearance signals a fresh chapter in his long-standing contribution to Uganda’s jazz scene.

The festival, scheduled for 10 May at the Kampala Serena Hotel, will feature performances from celebrated American saxophonist Kirk Whalum, Ugandan veteran Tshaka Mayanja and the Black Roots Academy of Soul, alongside Katumwa himself.

Speaking shortly after arriving in the country, Katumwa described the event as more than just a concert.

“Jazz is more than music—it’s a movement, a community, and a story,” he said. “I am thrilled to be part of this celebration, and I invite everyone—from die-hard jazz enthusiasts to curious newcomers—to experience a concert that blends culture, creativity, and connection.”

The festival is backed by dfcu Bank, which says it views the event as part of a wider effort to support arts and culture in Uganda. The financial institution marks 60 years of operations in 2025, and says the festival aligns with its long-standing commitment to empowering communities through shared experiences.

“Music has an extraordinary ability to transcend boundaries and connect people,” said dfcu Bank CEO Charles Mudiwa. “This concert is a reflection of our belief in the power of connection, and a celebration of the journey we’ve shared with Ugandans over the past six decades.”

Tickets are currently available at selected dfcu Bank branches and online via Quicket Uganda. Early bird general admission is priced at UGX 250,000, with tables of eight available at UGX 6,000,000.
