MultiChoice Uganda is teaming up with Sununu Effect Beauty Studio to support a three-day makeup masterclass, a partnership the company says underscores its ongoing investment in the local creative economy.

The training, branded The Sununu Effect Makeup Masterclass, will run from August 1 to 3 at Emin Pasha Hotel in Kampala. It’s expected to draw both aspiring and established makeup artists, alongside entrepreneurs working in Uganda’s growing beauty and cosmetics sector.

Colin Asiimwe, head of marketing at MultiChoice Uganda, described the partnership as part of a broader strategy to improve the quality of homegrown productions.

“The local content industry in Uganda is currently undergoing a renaissance,” he said. “For this rebirth to continue on the right trajectory, we need to hold each other’s hands.”

He added that collaborations like this are crucial to developing specialized skills behind the scenes—skills that audiences may not notice immediately, but that help determine how Ugandan shows compete on a global scale.

“Until then, we shall continue to back initiatives such as this that are tailored to improving specific skills,” Asiimwe said. “It adds to our arsenal of different expertise to elevate the industry to the very top.”

The masterclass aims to provide practical makeup techniques as well as guidance on how to navigate the business side of the industry. MultiChoice Uganda says it will support both pre- and post-event activities as part of its involvement.

Brian Mulondo, the company’s local content manager, pointed to the often-unseen influence of the beauty industry on television and film.

“Artistic expression is a crucial element in many local productions,” Mulondo said. “Through partnerships like this, we’re ensuring that makeup artists entering the industry are well-trained and ready to elevate local productions with their skills.”

He noted that MultiChoice Uganda has commissioned over 30 local shows, and many of them depend heavily on visual storytelling—an area where professional makeup plays a key role.

“We’re proud to have continuously supported the Ugandan beauty and cosmetic industry,” he said.

Claret Ayebare, founder of Sununu Effect Beauty Studio, said the partnership will not only improve industry standards but also deepen the talent pool available for Uganda’s film sector.

“This sector is crucial to the film industry,” Ayebare said. “Through such collaborations, we can develop a skilled talent pool so that the film sector can tap into a well-trained lineup of professionals.”

The training is seen as a potential springboard for future collaboration between MultiChoice and other sectors supporting local storytelling. The company’s platforms—such as Pearl Magic and Pearl Magic Prime—air Ugandan shows like Sanyu, Beloved, and Damalie, which rely heavily on local production crews.

MultiChoice Uganda, a subsidiary of MultiChoice Africa Holdings, was established in 1994. The company says it has contributed an estimated $150 million to the Ugandan economy and commissioned more than 10,000 hours of local content.

Its services are available through DStv and GOtv, offering more than 140 channels across various packages. Ugandan content is also accessible via DStv Stream and GOtv Stream.
