Beyoncé and Wizkid’s ‘Brown Skin Girl’ won the Outstanding Music Video / Visual Album Award on the fourth night of the 52nd NAACP Image Awards on 26 March.
On the fourth night of the 52nd National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Image Awards or simply NAACP, Beyoncé’s song ‘Brown Skin Girl’ featuring Afrobeats star Wizkid took home the Outstanding Music Video/Visual Album Award.
First held in 1967, the NAACP Image Awards recognize excellence by individuals of color in film, television, music, and literature. The awards this year, which have concluded, were virtually streamed from the start of the week.
The win marks Wizkid’s second consecutive NAACP Image Award victory after ‘Brown Skin Girl’ won the Outstanding Duo or Group Award last year. The song also won Best Music Video at the recently held 63rd Grammy Awards.
‘Brown Skin Girl’ by Beyoncé was released in 2019. It is featured on her 2020 visual album Black Is King.
This year, a number of West African popstars – including Nigerians Tiwa Savage and Davido, as well as Ghanaian Bisa Kdei – were in the running for the NAACP Image Award.
Wizkid was the only African winner, while Tiwa Savage and Davido lost in Outstanding International Song to Jamaican singer Koffee. In the category of Outstanding Soundtrack/Compilation Album, Bisa Kdei lost to the makers of the Soul film soundtrack.
The big winner this year was Beyoncé, as she also picked up the award for Outstanding Female Artist, as well as for Outstanding Duo and Outstanding Hip Hop / Rap Song for a remix of Megan Thee Stallion’s ‘Savage’.
