French media giant CANAL+ has announced that its sports arm, SuperSport, will broadcast the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) across English and Portuguese-speaking countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

The tournament — Africa’s biggest football event — kicks off in Morocco on Dec. 21, 2025. For the first time, viewers across the continent will be able to follow the action in French, English, Portuguese and several indigenous languages, a move that reflects the network’s expanded reach following its merger with South Africa’s MultiChoice earlier this year.

In a statement released on Nov. 6, CANAL+ confirmed that SuperSport had finalized a deal with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for exclusive broadcast rights in those territories.

“Our newly formed merger with the MultiChoice Group has already unlocked opportunities and benefits for our customers,” said CANAL+ Africa CEO David Mignot. “This year’s TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 is a great demonstration of the power and potential of this common ambition.”

He added that airing the tournament in multiple languages was a way to “build closeness with our viewers,” promising “unprecedented coverage” of what he called “the most spectacular celebration of African football.”

CAF President Patrice Motsepe called the partnership “an exciting day for CAF and for African football,” noting the growing global appeal of the tournament.

“When the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations takes place in Morocco in December, Africans everywhere — on the continent and across the diaspora — will be watching with pride,” Motsepe said. “Millions will follow the games on television, celebrating the best that African football has to offer.”

He pointed out that the 2024 tournament in Côte d’Ivoire drew an estimated 1.5 billion viewers worldwide. “We anticipate that this edition will be an even greater success,” he added. “When 180 nations express interest in broadcasting AFCON, it is proof that the world is excited about African football.”

Rendani Ramovha, MultiChoice’s Director of Sport Content for English and Portuguese-speaking Africa, said the network is preparing a dedicated SuperSport AFCON channel.

“We are especially proud to bring the story of the Africa Cup of Nations live to all our viewers,” Ramovha said. “SuperSport has been the preferred choice for millions of passionate fans across the continent, and this tournament won’t be different.”

He added that joining the CANAL+ Group will elevate the experience “to another level,” promising fans “more compelling viewing, brought to them in a language of their choice.”

Coverage will air on DStv and GOtv for SuperSport subscribers, while CANAL+ viewers can watch on CANAL+ Sport or via the CANAL+ app. Broadcasts will feature local-language commentary across Africa: English and Pidgin in Nigeria, Swahili in East Africa, Portuguese in Angola and Mozambique, and isiZulu and Setswana in South Africa.

The networks plan to bring in high-profile analysts, commentators and African football legends for match coverage. Viewers can expect to see continental stars such as Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen, Egypt’s Mohamed Salah, Senegal’s Sadio Mané, South Africa’s Ronwen Williams, Algeria’s Riyad Mahrez and Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi.

CANAL+ completed its $3 billion acquisition of MultiChoice in July 2025 after securing regulatory approval, giving the French company control of a combined media empire that now serves more than 40 million subscribers in nearly 70 countries. The deal has turned CANAL+ into one of the most influential broadcast players in the African market — and, with AFCON 2025 on the horizon, one of its most visible.
