The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed the stadiums that will stage the opening, third-place, and final matches of the 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN), a tournament co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
The competition, which features national teams made up of players active in their domestic leagues, will run from August 2 to August 30, 2025. This will be the first time since Rwanda 2016 that the tournament returns to East African soil.
CAF, working closely with the three host nations, announced the following key venues:
“Tanzania’s Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam will host the opening match of TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda (CHAN) 2024 on 02 August 2025.”
“Kenya’s Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi will host the Final match of the Competition on 30 August 2025.”
“The Mandela Stadium in Kampala, Uganda has been designated to host the third and fourth match of the event.”
In a move that emphasizes regional inclusivity, CAF has also added Zanzibar as one of the host locations.
“Zanzibar has been designated as one of the Host Venues – a decision that underscores CAF’s commitment to expanding the reach and inclusivity of African football.”
The Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar recently hosted the CAF Confederation Cup final in May, which CAF cited as a successful dress rehearsal for CHAN.
The group stage matches will be split among four cities:
- Group A (Nairobi, Kenya): Kenya, Morocco, Angola, DR Congo, Zambia
- Group B (Dar es Salaam, Tanzania): Tanzania, Madagascar, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic
- Group C (Kampala, Uganda): Uganda, Niger, Guinea, South Africa, Algeria
- Group D (Zanzibar): Senegal, Congo, Sudan, Nigeria
Each city will serve as home base for one group of five national teams.
While CAF’s press release repeated some of the venue details, the core message is clear: CHAN 2024 is shaping up to be one of the most geographically inclusive editions of the tournament, highlighting East Africa’s growing role in continental football.
