The fourth edition of the iKON Awards has shortlisted 121 films across 26 categories, with nominations spanning Uganda’s film and television industry and productions from other African countries.

The nominees were announced on October 24, 2026, during an event that included discussions among filmmakers on cross-border collaboration.

Humphrey Nabimanya, founder of the iKON Awards, said cooperation was necessary for the growth of African cinema.

“Collaboration is essential to building a strong film industry because no single filmmaker can tell Africa’s stories alone,” he said.

The awards ceremony is scheduled for December 12 at Serena Hotel in Kampala, under the theme “Beyond Border”, which organisers say is intended to encourage partnerships between filmmakers across national boundaries.

Regional categories broaden competition

The 2026 nominations include 24 entries from across Africa, reflecting the awards’ wider regional focus. The categories include recognition for East and Central African, West African, North African, Francophone and Southern African films.

The regional categories give productions from different parts of the continent a place in the competition alongside films competing in the main categories.

According to reports published ahead of the nominations announcement, the organisers received more than 300 film submissions, which they described as a record for the awards. The regional categories were introduced as part of this year’s cross-border focus.

The nominees include films such as Adui, Janani: Last Stand, Kimote and Small Gods in the Best Film category. The Best Director category features Ayeny T Steve for Adui, Matt Bish for Janani: Last Stand, Hassan Mageye for Kimote, Rehema Nanfuka for Nkinzi and Asher Rosen for Small Gods.

Other categories recognise performances in leading and supporting roles, screenwriting, cinematography, editing, costume design, production design, animation, documentaries, student films and television series.

The awards also include an iKON Rising Star category, which recognises emerging talent.

The December ceremony will bring the fourth edition of the awards to a close, with the organisers’ stated focus on strengthening collaboration across Africa’s film industry.
