Priscilla Zawedde, better known as Azawi, is nominated in several top music categories, among them Outstanding Album of the Year, Female Artist of the Year, Outstanding Afrobeat/Pop Artist, and Outstanding Performer.
Janzi Awards aims to provide an inclusive platform to recognize and celebrate outstanding achievements, innovations, and diversity in Uganda’s cultural, creative, and performing arts forms.
Awards are named after a Janzi Instrument, an instrument invented by James Ssewakiryanga and inspired by African music.
This instrument is named after the Luganda word for grasshopper, ‘Ejjanzi,’ whose spirit and natural form is reflected in the design and feel of the instrument.
Chairperson of the Janzi Award organising committee, Sylvia Owori, said they received over 75,000 entries before reducing them to 300 from which the winners will be announced this month.
According to her, the awards recognize the creative industry’s role in creating jobs as well as its contribution to the economy.
In the “Outstanding Album of the Year” category in the Janzi Awards 2021, Azawi competes against Ykee Benda (Kirabo album) and Eddy Kenzo (Made in Africa).
The 25-year-old ‘Slow dancing’ singer will compete against Shebaah Karungi, Eddy Kenzo and Pallaso in the ‘Outstanding Performer’ category.
Azawi and Kenzo had previously worked together on the song ‘Nkuchekele’ off the ‘African Music’ album, which is currently topping all mainstream media charts.
Lastly, Azawi was also nominated in the category of ”Female Artist of the Year”, in which she will face off against Sheebah Karungi and Spice Diana.

As part of this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award in Music, Moses Matovu of Africa Band will be honored for his contributions to Uganda’s music industry.
In fashion, Mavo Kampala aka ‘stylist of stars’ is nominated for ‘Outstanding Stylist in Fashion’. He will compete against Tazibone Solomon and Larry Casual.
In the category of ‘Outstanding Fashion Designer,’ Abbas Kaijuka takes on Stella Atal and Discrete UG.
