Netflix, which dominates streaming entertainment, received 160 nominations in the 2020 Emmy awards.

During a virtual event on Tuesday night, the TV Academy announced the nominations for the 2020 Emmy Awards. Comedian Leslie Jones co-hosted the event with announcers Lavern Cox, Josh Gott and Tatiana Maslany.

As with any award show, there were some snaps. (Rhea Seehorn is not a candidate, and Stranger Things Season 3 is somehow in contention for the best drama series).

However, if we all have a big journey to accept, streaming services have secured their place at the top of the Emmy race.

Whose game is this, but there is tight competition

This year a few big players, usually blocking the competition in the main categories, are not running. Still, in every category, the competition was fierce.

Last year, Game of Thrones and Fleabag absorbed all the oxygen from the room. The fantasy play was drawn in 32 nominations and eventually won in 12 categories.

Meanwhile, Phoebe got 11 nominations for Waller-Bridge’s dark comedy, which won six. No show has been running this year since both ended in 2019. This means that it’s also about to be the most enchanted time of the year.

However, that doesn’t mean a lot of competition doesn’t exist. There are new appointment limits in many categories, which means getting approval was harder than ever. At the same time, there were more than ever before in many key categories.

In 2019, there were 88 submissions for Best Leading Actress in a Drama Series. There were 135 this year.

Broadcast from streaming water

One clear thing is the dominance of streaming services. Netflix, which dominates streaming entertainment, received 160 nominations in the 2020 Emmy awards.

Meanwhile, HBO, Cable Jaguar, now lowers its toes on online streaming, has received 107. Compared to broadcast networks like NBC and ABC, it received a simple 83 referrals.

In the major categories (Comedy Series, Drama Series, Late Night, Limited Series and Acting), the networks had only 11 out of 112 nominations.

All of this proves that switching from broadcast to streaming is not a drawback. Rather it is the present and anticipated future of entertainment.
