Prominent figures in the Nigerian Afrobeats music scene, namely Rema, Oxlade, Wizkid, Burna Boy, Tems, and Ayra Starr, along with Cameroonian songstress Libianca, have been selected as finalists for accolades at the 2023 Billboard Music Awards, scheduled to be broadcast on November 19.
Having its inception 32 years ago, these awards aim to recognize exceptional musical achievements, evaluating criteria like album and digital song sales, streaming, radio airplay, concert tours, and social media involvement.
Rema, who emerges as Africa’s most nominated artist for this year’s awards, has earned an impressive seven nominations, primarily attributed to his global hit single ‘Calm Down’ featuring Selena Gomez. His nominations span categories like Top Collaboration and Top Radio Song.
Furthermore, Rema has clinched a nomination in the newly introduced category of Top Afrobeats Artist, where he will compete against the likes of Burna Boy, Libianca, Tems, and Wizkid. The newly established Top Afrobeats Song category showcases contributions from Rema, Oxlade, Libianca, Victony, and Ayra Starr.
On a broader scale, Taylor Swift, the renowned US pop sensation, leads this year’s nominations with an impressive tally of 20 categories. Following closely, Morgan Wallen and SZA both garner 17 nominations, while The Weeknd secures 16 nominations.
