The president of the National Unity Platform (NUP) and flag bearer Robert Kyagulanyi, has been allowed to resume his political campaigns as long as it conforms to the guidelines of the Electoral Commission (EC).

This was announced by Iganga Chief Justice Jessica Chemeri on Friday, who granted the presidential candidate one million shillings in cash bail and ordered him to return to court on December 18.
In a statement, the chief justice urged Robert Kyagulanyi to be free to begin his political campaigns, however, urging him to abide by the Electoral Commission’s guidelines aimed at curbing the spread of Govt-19.
The magistrate said that Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu was forced to accept only 200 people in his campaigns and that everyone should wear a mask and observe the proper social distance to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
“The accused has fulfilled all the bail conditions and hereby I grant him UGX 1,000,000 bail. Since he is a presidential candidate, the accused is advised to abide by all the Election Commission guidelines,” a part of the verdict read.
There must be 200 people at his campaign meetings, all wearing masks and observing the social distance to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, ”it added.
Meanwhile on Wednesday in Luuka district, Kyagulanyi was arrested and detained in Nalufenya Police Station on charges of careless conduct that could spread infectious disease, blocking, incitement to violence, and unauthorized gathering.
At least 37 people have been killed as a result of the protests, according to a police report released Friday, raising concerns that the death toll could rise in the coming days.
