Former Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Professor Morris Ogenga Latigo, recently sustained injuries in a serious accident in Nakasongola district along the Kampala-Gulu highway. The accident involved Latigo’s Mercedes Benz with registration number UBG 961D and a truck with registration UBJ 070B owned by Victoria Sugar Limited in Luwero district. It occurred on a Saturday night at 23:50 pm at Lubenge swamp along the highway.
Professor Latigo was traveling to Kampala while the truck was headed in the same direction, bound for the Victoria Sugar plant in Luwero. According to a statement from ASP Sam Twineamazima, the Savannah Regional Police Spokesperson, Professor Latigo, who was driving himself, collided with the stationary truck loaded with sugarcane, resulting in minor injuries. He was promptly taken to Bishop Ceaser Asili hospital for treatment.
Both vehicles involved in the accident were towed to Kakooge Police Station to clear the traffic along the highway. Police has initiated a manhunt for the truck driver responsible for the accident.
Remarkably, this is the fifth time that Professor Latigo has survived an accident. In January 2019, his car overturned at Kalongo village on his way to Kitgum. In January 2011, he was involved in another accident on the same Gulu-Kampala Highway in Kiryandongo district, where his vehicle collided with a cyclist, resulting in a fatality. In October 2009, Professor Latigo survived a fatal accident on the same Kampala-Gulu Highway, but his driver and a young woman lost their lives. On January 30, 2018, he was involved in yet another accident when his vehicle collided with a trailer parked along Kampala Highway in Kakooge, Luwero District.
