After a break, the MTN FUFA Awards are back—and they promise to be bigger than ever.
The seventh edition of the prestigious ceremony was launched at the Kampala Serena Hotel, marking a major return for one of Ugandan football’s most anticipated events. This year’s awards, set for 30 May 2025, will celebrate the best in local football under the theme “Celebrating Football Heroes, Inspiring Future Stars.”
A total of 16 categories will be contested, with standout performers in both the men’s and women’s game recognised. The Male and Female Most Valuable Players will each receive a brand-new car, while other category winners will walk away with medals and cash prizes.
The return of the awards follows a hiatus brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.
At the launch, FUFA Awards Committee Chairperson Rogers Byamukama described the event as “a national reflection of our football journey.”
“The FUFA Awards are not just a celebration; they are a tribute to the stars who inspire the next generation,” he said.
FUFA CEO Edgar Watson echoed those sentiments, pointing to a broader focus this year.
“This year’s awards shine a spotlight on growth, diversity and excellence—both on and off the pitch,” he said. “We’re excited to bring the football family together again.”

MTN, the title sponsor, reaffirmed its backing of the sport. John Paul Okwi, the company’s Sponsorship Manager, underlined the unity football brings.
“Football is the game of many colours and many tribes, and that reflects what MTN stands for—Together We Are Unstoppable,” Okwi said. “The MTN-FUFA Awards will become a staple on the football calendar.”
More Than Just MVPs
In addition to the flagship MVP honours, awards will be handed out for:
- Best XI (Men and Women)

- Beach Soccer Player of the Year
- Futsal Player of the Year

New for this edition is the MTN Media Personality of the Year, a nod to the role journalists and broadcasters play in growing the game.
Fans will also be recognised through the “Fans of the Year” category, and their voices will be central to the voting process. Public voting opens 1 May and runs through to 25 May, with FUFA promising a transparent and inclusive system.
After a few quiet years, Uganda’s football stars are finally getting their stage back. And come May 30th, the lights will be firmly on them.
