Former Leader of Opposition in Parliament and Nyendo-Mukungwe MP, Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba, has launched a new political party, the Democratic Front (DF), marking a significant shift in Uganda’s opposition landscape ahead of the 2026 general elections.
The unveiling of the party on Tuesday comes just six months before the official campaign season begins. Mpuuga was joined at the launch by Members of Parliament Abed Bwanika (Kimanya-Kabonera), Michael Kakembo (Entebbe Municipality), and Juliet Nakabuye (District Woman MP for Masaka), signalling a breakaway bloc from the National Unity Platform (NUP).

“It is born out of our motherland’s need for meaningful transformation that transcends the tired cycle of recycled ideologies,” Mpuuga said in a statement posted on X, formerly Twitter.
He described the Democratic Front not as a disruptive force, but as a “necessity born of the failures of the status quo.” He said the party aims to be a home for “logical thinkers, progressive minds, and those who believe in political ethics and disciplined service delivery.”
According to a certificate of registration dated 6 May 2025, and signed by the Electoral Commission, the Democratic Front is a rebranded version of the Green Partisan Party. The change of name was formalised under Section 6(10) of the Political Parties and Organisations Act.
The formation of the Democratic Front follows a high-profile fallout between Mpuuga and the leadership of NUP, Uganda’s largest opposition party. Once seen as a key pillar in the movement, Mpuuga served as NUP Deputy President for the Central Region before months of internal wrangles and disagreements over accountability and ideological direction led to his exit.
