The odds against Tracy Kirabo, commonly known as Pia Pounds, would have discouraged a less hardworking woman. Her childhood life was full of struggle, pain, poverty and illness.
But at the age of 13, she joined the Uganda music industry, worked with Ragga Dee and it’s her talent that made even Eddy Kenzo take notice of Pia and signed her under Big Talent Entertainment.
Pia – The Struggling Family
Pia Pounds, 22 years old, was born Tracy Kirabo, but later switched to Pia Pounds after joining the music industry.
She was born in a family of 4 (Silver, Mary, Patience and Tracy). Pia grew up in a very troubled home, she lost her sister and mother at a very tender age.
She can’t begin to describe the pain she and her siblings went through to survive, Pia Pounds recounted to her Facebook fans how hard it was to make it.
It was a constant source of stress in Pia’s life. At 12 years, she was doing every job anyone could present to her in order to provide for her little family after becoming the caretaker.
With my mpuumi- I was forced to be hardworking the hard way, because I only had myself, my dreams and a little hope. By 12 I was doing every job anyone could present me.
Pia – Her Talent & Gift
You can’t separate Pia from music. Her decision to become an artist started way back in S4 vacation.
At the age of 16, she was favored that the first time she stepped in a studio, singer Ragga Dee asked to feature on one of her song – she told Sqoop.
I first took on the decision of being an artist in my senior four vac – at the age of 16. I was favored that the first time I stepped in studio a big artist Ragga Dee asked to feature on my song.
Pia – Hall of Fame
Before devoting to music completely, Pia kept her dreams alive, and she didn’t quit studies.
Pia continued, now she’s pursuing a degree in business and management studies at International University of East Africa, Kasanga. Expected to graduate later this year.
But not so long after working with Ragga Dee, Pia enrolled in studio to record her album and that’s where luck found her.
Eddy Kenzo found Pia recording with city producer Kuseim at Banq Records, one of the studios owned by Big Talent and marked interest in her music – according to reports.
Kenzo is a natural mentor, before I knew it he was directing me and making a few changes in the song I was recording. After a few weeks he sat me down and asked me if being a star was my goal. I told him ‘yes’ and a contract was signed.
Pia – Life is a Lesson
None of the above came easily, though.
After years of hardship, struggles, trying moments, ups and downs, Pia learnt not to judge people by their looks, jobs, or what they say but rather their real life stories because that is what shapes everyone.
I’ve learnt never to judge anyone by their looks jobs or what they say – but by their story. Our stories shape us.
