Veteran Ugandan actor, journalist and dramatist Charles James Ssenkubuge is mourning the death of his wife, Agnes Lillian Ssenkubuge, who died at their home in Makindye on Monday morning, Sept. 21, 2026.
Agnes’ death has prompted messages of condolence from colleagues and friends in Uganda’s entertainment and media circles.
Actor Andrew Benon Kibuuka said Agnes had been dealing with health complications related to fibroids. According to Kibuuka, she underwent surgery, was discharged from hospital and continued receiving treatment at home.
Kibuuka said Agnes died at the family home while her nurse had briefly left to attend to personal matters.
The medical circumstances surrounding her death have not been independently confirmed.
Agnes and Ssenkubuge had been married for more than a decade and had four children together, according to earlier profiles of the veteran actor.
Ssenkubuge is a longtime figure in Uganda’s theatre and media industry. He was among the founders of Bakayimbira Dramactors and later worked in radio and television, in addition to his work as an actor and playwright.
A vigil is being held at the family home in Makindye.
A Requiem Mass for Agnes is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 22, at Christ the King Church in Kampala. Her body will then be taken to Ssanda-Nakawuka in Busiro for burial on Wednesday, Sept. 23, at the Ssenkubuge ancestral home.
