Due to the coronavirus, almost all providers, guests and nominees were forced to rely on remote camera systems. Comedian Jimmy Kimmel aired live from the Empty Staples Center in Los Angeles. It seemed like a mess waiting to happen, but the show (obviously) had to continue – and it went on without any interruption.
Candidates like Schitt’s Creek, Succession, and Watchmen are all vying for numerous trophies, and the recent winners like Game of Thrones and Fleabag are no longer on the air, with the biggest bets being a little more predictable than usual.
Schitt’s Creek swept the categories of comedy, taking home all of the seven awards for which it was nominated, including the excellent comedy series and the four awards for comedy. Combined with its two successes at the Creative Arts Emmys earlier this week, Shittin Creek’s nine Emmys set a new record for most hits in a comedy series in a single year.
It was an excellent villain for the popular Canadian series, with its sixth and final season airing earlier this year. But it also means that other comedy shows such as The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, which has long been Emmys favourite and nominated for 18 awards this year, have gone with zero success. (For the same Good Place, another well-liked comedy closed in 2020.)
Watchmen was among the greatest winners in the limited Emmys series categories in 2020, taking home 3 of the 7 categories in which they had been nominated. HBO took home Outstanding Limited Series for an acclaimed adaptation of its comics. The stars Regina King and Yahya Abdul-Matteen II have earned top awards for their acting.
I Know This Much Is True, Unorthodox, other nominated series, and Mrs America has also won home trophies in large categories (lead actor, director, and supportive actress, respectively).
HBO also won big in Succession in the category of dramas and preceded winners for Writing, Directing and Lead Actor (Jeremy Strong) with its first Outstanding Series Drama victory.
