Police have launched an investigation to determine who carried out the attack in the wake of the death of former national team boxing champion Zebra Ssenyange.

Skipper Isaac Ssenyange, also known as Mando, was shot dead by gunmen in the early hours of Wednesday, December 30, 2020, in Bwaise, a suburb of Kampala.

Assistant Police Spokesman Luke Owoyesigire said investigations were underway to determine the real culprits behind the death of Zebra Ssenyange, according to a police report released Wednesday morning.

Owoyesigire said area police have already documented the incident and have recovered important evidence and ammunition to help with the investigation.

“Area police have responded and have already documented the scene. Important evidence and ammunition have been recovered from the scene. The body of the deceased was taken to the city morgue Mulago for autopsy,” he said.

“Our team of intelligence and investigative officers has begun the process of compiling evidence collected with the aim of identifying the attackers after Zebra’s murder. Further details will be revealed as investigations progress.”

However, Owoyesigire said eyewitnesses allege that the deceased was abducted from his home by unidentified assailants travelling in two vehicles at around 1 am on December 30, 2020. A police spokesman said the deceased was later shot 400 meters from his home.

“Area police in Kawempe are investigating the murder of a boxer Zebra Ssenyange, who lives in St. Francis Zone, Bwaise III Parish,” he added.

“According to eyewitnesses, the deceased was taken away from his home by unidentified assailants at 1am on 30/12/2020 at around 1am and their number is unknown. They were travelling in two vehicles. He was later shot 400 meters away and died instantly from his home. “

The wife of the murdered boxer told residents that her husband’s killers knocked on his door and shot him several times when he opened it.

Who is Ssenyange?

Zebra Ssenyange, 39, is best remembered for leading the Bombers at the 10th All Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique in 2011.

When he made his debut against Kenya’s Patrick Amot in 2012, his fifteen-year amateur career was marked by 195 wins and 19 defeats before becoming a professional.

At the time of his death, Mando Ssenyange was serving as the head of public affairs for the Ugandan Boxing Federation (UBF) and he also co-ordinated his own Zebra Boxing Club.

Charles Muhangi, president of the Ugandan Boxing Federation (UBF), said he was saddened by Ssenyange’s death.

“Am saddened by the brutal passing of my man, my friend, my everything. Till we meet again,” he posted on social media.
