An epidemic is imminent, but it did not stop MTV from awarding the 2020 Video Music Awards winners.
It did not stop MTV in the months leading up to the VMAs, ranging from plans to hold awards at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn to the news that artists from hotspot states are being exempted from New York’s compulsory 14-day isolation.
After all, the awards finally took place: live, almost across New York City. Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande and Korean BTS led the night, with Gaga and Grande each taking home four moon people each after entering with nine nominations.
Lady Gaga also took home the first MTV Tricon Award, while The Weeknd won this year’s video for “Blinding Lights”. MTV also presented the New Contagion Awards for Best Music Video.
Taylor Swift won the best direction and sent the acceptance video message from home. This year’s video, Best VMA, went to The Weeknd for his successful “Blinding Lights”. He opened the show with a single performance.
