Can people with high cholesterol eat eggs?

KAMPALA | LIFESTYLE UGANDA ( http://lifestyleuganda.com/) — While eggs are a delicious and versatile kitchen staple that can be used to prepare a variety of quick and easy meals, they also have a long history of being vilified for their high cholesterol levels.

While it’s true that eggs do contain high amounts of cholesterol, the truth is that most people don’t actually eat enough eggs to have any significant impact on their overall cholesterol levels.

In fact, studies have shown that eating one egg a day is not only perfectly healthy but can also be beneficial for your heart when compared to consuming other sources of protein.

Here are some of the reasons why you should never avoid eating eggs just because they’re high in cholesterol:

Eggs are extremely nutritious

Eggs are a great source of high-quality protein, vitamin B12 and choline (which is important for brain function). They also contain plenty of selenium, zinc and iron which help protect your body from inflammation.

And last but not least, eggs are a good source of omega-3 fatty acids which can lower your risk for heart disease when consumed in moderation.

Eggs don’t increase cholesterol as much as you think they do

A large scale study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association revealed that consuming one egg a day does not raise your risk for heart disease. In fact, eating an egg a day actually lowers your risk for cardiovascular disease by 7 per cent.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that high blood pressure, high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, secondhand smoke exposure, obesity, unhealthy diets, and physical inactivity are major risk factors for heart disease and stroke.

Another study published in The Journal of the American College of Nutrition found that there was no significant difference between people who ate two eggs a day and those who consumed none at all.

If you’re already eating high-cholesterol foods, adding eggs to your diet won’t make a huge difference

If you’re already eating foods that are high in cholesterol like red meat and dairy products, then adding eggs to your diet won’t make much of a difference. In fact, the only thing that will increase your overall levels is if you consume more than one egg per day.

You can easily control how many eggs you eat

If you’re worried about consuming too many eggs and having an adverse effect on your cholesterol levels, then simply pay attention to how many you’re eating. Most people only need to eat one or two eggs per week, which makes it easy to control your cholesterol intake with this delicious food.

Eating the right kind of egg can actually help lower your bad cholesterol levels

A study published in The Journal of Nutrition showed that eating whole eggs can significantly reduce your LDL (bad) cholesterol levels compared to just egg whites. This is because the yolk contains a lot of fatty acids and other nutrients that are good for your heart.

Eating eggs can help prevent heart disease

Eating one egg a day is actually good for your health and can reduce your risk for developing cardiovascular diseases like atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries).

This is because the protein found in eggs acts as an antioxidant that helps combat free radicals in your body, which are known to cause inflammation.
