Temilade Openiyi, better known as Tems, won the title of ‘Best International Act’ at the 2022 BET Awards, becoming the first African woman to win in the category.
KAMPALA | LIFESTYLE UGANDA — Known professionally as Tems, Temilade Openiyi won the ‘Best International Act’ award at the 2022 BET Awards, making her the first African woman to win in this category.
With her win, she became the first African woman to win in the category. Her hit collaboration “Essence” with Wizkid launched her international career in 2021.

On Sunday, the BET Awards 2022 took place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. The awards recognize excellence in music, culture, and sport.
At the 2022 BET Awards, Tems defeated Dave, Dinos, Fally Ipupa (DRC), Fireboy DML (Nigeria), Little Simz, Ludmilla, Major League DJz (South Africa) and Tayc as the winner of the ‘Best International Act’ category.
In a statement seen by nowthendigital.com when she received the award, Tems dedicated her award to every young woman striving to live her dreams one day.
“Thank you so much for this, thank you so much. It’s an honour… I mean, this is my first award show that I’m winning something and I just want to use this as an opportunity to speak to every single young, old, whatever, every single woman watching this, every single girl watching this at home.”
“Where I’m from, things like this don’t happen.”
Going forward, Essence has added another award to Wizkid’s resume after winning ‘Best collaboration’ at the BET Awards 2022.
Essence’s version that won the award for Best Collaboration was the one featuring Tems and Justin Bieber, which was released in 2021 after its initial release.
