Shoppers at Carrefour outlets across Uganda have a new reason to smile, thanks to a partnership between Ecobank Uganda and the retail giant aimed at making cashless payments easier—and more rewarding.
The partnership, launched this week, will see the rollout of Ecobank’s Smart Point-of-Sale (POS) terminals at all Carrefour stores countrywide. Customers can now pay seamlessly using debit, prepaid, and credit cards, as well as popular mobile money platforms like MTN MoMo and Airtel Money.
Speaking during the launch at Carrefour Oasis Mall, Ms Grace Muliisa, the Managing Director of Ecobank Uganda, said the initiative—dubbed “Swipe and Win”—seeks not only to promote digital payments but also to reward loyal shoppers.
“Five lucky customers each week will get a chance to participate in a trolley dash worth Shs500,000, grabbing as many items as they can within a set time,” Ms Muliisa said. Over the campaign period, 20 winners are expected to benefit, sharing a total of Shs10 million in prizes.
Winners will be announced during Carrefour’s weekly “Magic Hour” activations across its outlets, including at Lugogo Mall, Metroplex Mall, Victoria Mall, and Acacia Mall.
Ms Muliisa said the partnership reinforces Ecobank’s push towards a cashless economy while offering secure, user-friendly payment options. She noted that the new POS terminals will accept major card networks such as Visa, MasterCard, and Interswitch, along with Apple and Samsung Pay.
“This is part of our commitment to delivering a convenient and secure shopping experience for all customers,” she said.
Mr Emmanuel Kikoni, Head of Cash Management at Ecobank, added that the Smart POS terminals are designed for speed, instantly processing transactions and issuing receipts to both shoppers and stores.
On his part, Mr Christophe Orcet, Regional Director for East Africa at Carrefour, described the partnership as timely. “We are proud to work with Ecobank to offer more efficient, secure payment solutions, while also creating moments of joy for our customers through exciting rewards, especially this Easter season,” he said.
Ecobank Uganda is part of Ecobank Transnational Incorporated (ETI), which operates in 33 African countries with its headquarters in Lomé, Togo. The bank’s local operations include 14 ATMs and 14 Xpress Points serving different business segments.
Carrefour, operated by Majid Al Futtaim, is one of the fastest-growing retail brands in Uganda, and part of a wider regional expansion. The UAE-based conglomerate has interests across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, employing over 43,000 people.
