Mezo Noir, a popular upscale hangout in Kololo, has temporarily shut down.
In a statement on March 20, the club cited “unforeseen circumstances” but didn’t give specific reasons for the closure.
“Due to unforeseen circumstances, Mezo Noir Kampala will be temporarily closed to the public, effective immediately, until further notice,” the venue announced on social media. They apologized for any inconvenience and promised to share a reopening date later.
The closure comes after Martha Ahumuza, a recent ISBAT University graduate, collapsed at the club and was rushed to the hospital. Witnesses say she may have consumed a spiked drink before being taken out through the exit.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango said Ahumuza is still on life support. “The doctors at the hospital have not yet pronounced the victim dead. Reports from the doctors indicate that she is still on life support system, her brain is dead but other organs are still functioning,” he confirmed.
Police have arrested two men, Edward Mugabo and his brother Joseph Kalenzi, to assist with the investigation.
