Alone Together recognizes the best performances of almost every event that takes place during the 2020 lockdown, celebrating artists who went to streaming services to share their music and unite the community.
The MAMA Awards go to Uganda
The MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA), which showcases the finale of African culture, music and creativity, will take place on February 20, 2021, in collaboration with Uganda in a re-imagined virtual format.
The MTV Africa Music Awards 2021 will air live from Kampala on February 20, 2021, on MTV Base (DSTV Channel 322) and MTV (DSTV Channel 130).
Organizers say the one-hour MAMA-themed MTV will be re-broadcast on BET Africa, BET International and MTV channels across many continents as a global feature.
The final celebration of local African and international talents and achievements, MAMA 2021, along with Uganda recognizes and rewards those who shine the light on the musicians, trailblazers and continental diversity of talent and creativity by making a positive impact on African music and youth culture.
The awards ceremony will feature vibrant performances by leading African and international artists, as well as showcasing some of the larger cross-category and cross-border collaborations.
Virtual MTV Africa Awards
The MAMA Awards Kampala 2021 is the first live broadcast of the Virtual MTV Africa Awards. This is the first time the awards will be held in Uganda.
Craig Patterson, senior vice president of Viacom CBS Networks Africa, said the holding of the awards would “transcend the diverse cross-border collaboration between international and African artists”.
Ugandan Tourism Minister Godfrey Kiwanda said the announcement was a “great day” for Africa and Uganda, which was “very excited” to present the awards.
“This is the best moment in Africa where we can show the pearl of Africa. Welcome to Pearl Uncles of Africa! Welcome MAMA to Uganda, he said.”
Kiwanda said hosting the MAMA would be done in conjunction with the ministry to boost the country’s tourism profile. Tourism accounts for 10 per cent of the East African country’s GDP.
The first MAMAs were held in 2008 and last held in 2016 in Johannesburg, South Africa. The other awards were held in East Africa in 2009 in Nairobi, Kenya.
