Musuuga Charles Kayondo Kamurasi Akiiki, the Chief Prince and head of the Babiito Royal Clan, has taken a central role in the affairs of Tooro Kingdom following the death of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV in August 2026.

As head of the Babiito, the royal clan from which Tooro kings are traditionally drawn, Kamurasi oversees a number of cultural and royal responsibilities, including matters relating to the succession and installation of a new monarch.

Kamurasi was born in the mid-1940s at the Royal Palace in Kabarole to Omukama George David Matthew Kamurasi Rukidi III and Omugo Leah Ngaju.

His father ruled Tooro from 1928 until 1965. His mother was a Bunyoro princess and daughter of Omubiito Yoweri Komwiswa. She was also a grandchild of Omukama Kabalega of Bunyoro.

Kamurasi is a descendant of Omukama George Rukidi III, the 11th King of Tooro. He was also a brother of Omukama Patrick Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III, the 12th King, making him an uncle of Oyo, who became the 13th King of Tooro.

His maternal and paternal family ties place him within the royal lineage that has historically shaped the leadership of the kingdom.

Publicly available information about Kamurasi’s formal education is limited.

Kamurasi currently serves as Omujwera Omusuuga, commonly referred to as the Chief Prince, and as the head of the Babiito Royal Clan.

The office carries traditional responsibilities within the kingdom. These include convening royal meetings, advising on royal matters, participating in funeral arrangements and overseeing cultural processes connected to the identification and installation of a new king.

Prince Keith Kagoro Amooti previously served as Musuuga during the reign of Kamurasi’s father, Rukidi III. Kamurasi later succeeded him in the position.

Prince Kato Benard Ocaaki Rwakatale Abbooki assists Kamurasi in carrying out his traditional responsibilities.

The office is also associated with other royal functions, including coronation rituals, burial arrangements, confirmation of royal lineages and matters concerning the throne and Regency.

Kamurasi has described himself as having had a close relationship with the late King Oyo and as having played a role in his care during his childhood.

According to the account provided, Oyo’s father entrusted Kamurasi with responsibility for the young prince when he was away serving as Uganda’s ambassador to Cuba. Oyo became king in 1995 at the age of three following the death of his father.

Family

Kamurasi has several children. Two of his known sons are Prince Komwiswa Yoweri and Prince Solomon Nyaika.

The two became involved in the succession debate following Oyo’s death and were reported to have supported an interpretation of the late king’s will that they said provided for continuity of the throne.

The succession dispute

Oyo’s death in August 2026 placed Kamurasi at the centre of a dispute over who should succeed him.

Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire said after the king’s death that Oyo had left behind a son who would be presented at the appropriate time as the heir.

Kamurasi disputed that position, saying the Babiito Royal Clan had not been informed of the existence of such an heir. He also questioned the Prime Minister’s authority to determine the successor, arguing that the matter fell within the cultural responsibilities of the Babiito.

Kamurasi subsequently led a 21-member committee established to handle the succession process and related cultural arrangements.

He said that, if no legitimate biological heir could be established, the royal lineage would be traced through Oyo’s family to determine the next king.

The succession process later became contested, with members of Oyo’s immediate family opposing the successor announced by Kamurasi.

On September 15, 2026, the Tooro Kingdom Supreme Council endorsed Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as the next king, according to the supplied account. He was to assume the name Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I.

Kamurasi subsequently announced the selected successor and continued to defend the process despite opposition from members of Oyo’s immediate family.

He later announced that the formal coronation was scheduled for September 29, 2026, after the completion of the required cultural rituals.

At Oyo’s burial at St John’s Cathedral, Kamurasi said the selection of a new king had been conducted in accordance with Ugandan law and the cultural and traditional norms of Tooro Kingdom.

A royal connection to Oyo

Kamurasi’s role in the succession debate is closely linked to his longstanding relationship with Oyo.

He was part of the royal family that cared for Oyo after the death of his father and remained associated with the young monarch as he grew into the role.

That history placed Kamurasi in a position of influence within the kingdom when Oyo died and the question of succession emerged.

His position as Chief Prince also gave him a formal role in the cultural processes surrounding the transition.

The succession dispute has therefore brought both his family connection to the late king and the traditional authority of the Musuuga office into public focus.
