The death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV has opened a succession dispute in Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom, with royal clan elders backing a new monarch while the late king’s immediate family says he left behind an heir.

King Oyo died at about 10 p.m. on Aug. 27, 2026, while receiving cancer treatment in the United States. He was 34.

His death ended a 31-year reign that began when he was a toddler.

Oyo succeeded his father, Omukama Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Rwamuhokya Olimi III, in 1995, becoming the 13th Omukama of Tooro. At three, he was recognised as the world’s youngest reigning monarch.

The rituals to proclaim him king began at about 2 a.m. on Sept. 12, 1995, a week after his father’s burial. They included a mock battle at the palace entrance and a traditional test of his claim to royal blood.

After passing the test, Oyo sounded the Nyalebe, a sacred Chwezi drum associated with Tooro royalty.

He was crowned at about 4 a.m. before a jubilant crowd and entered Karuziika Palace as the new ruler. His first meal as king was millet dough.

President Yoweri Museveni attended the coronation celebrations.

Although Oyo was regarded as the sovereign leader of the Batooro, his formal powers were largely cultural. Three regents were appointed to oversee his development and manage the kingdom’s cultural affairs during his childhood and youth. They included Prince James Mugenyi, Princess Elizabeth Bagaaya and his mother, Queen Mother Best Kemigisa.

Oyo later pursued his education abroad. He graduated from the University of Winchester in October 2013 with a bachelor’s degree.

His reign also included a growing focus on environmental conservation.

In 2019, amid concerns about pollution and siltation in the Mpanga River, Oyo joined community members in cleaning and desilting the river. He later campaigned under the “Save River Mpanga Now” initiative.

The river supplies water to Fort Portal and runs through Kibale National Park before reaching Lake George.

Oyo was also associated with youth empowerment, education, climate conservation and health advocacy. He served as a global ambassador for HIV/AIDS awareness and launched the Tooro Kingdom Vision 2045 development framework.

In 2019, he was named among the Global Top 100 Most Influential People of African Descent.

His death was announced by Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, who described it as an “immeasurable loss” to the royal family, the people of Tooro and Uganda.

“It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that I announce the passing of His Majesty the Omukama of Tooro, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, at approximately 10:00 p.m. this evening,” Rwomiire said.

“This is an immeasurable loss to the Royal Family, the people of Tooro, and the nation of Uganda. Omukama Atulize. Enkuba Etutire.”

The mourning period was followed by a dispute over who should inherit the throne.

Royal clan elders named Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, a 56-year-old UBC TV news presenter, as the next monarch. The decision was rejected by members of Oyo’s immediate family.

The announcement has triggered a dispute days before the burial of King Oyo.

Princess Ruth Komuntale, the late king’s sister, said Oyo had left a will in 2022 naming his young son as heir. The identity of the child has not been publicly disclosed.

“My brother did leave behind an heir to the throne, and that was very clearly stated,” Komuntale said.

She accused those behind the announcement of creating “confusion and turmoil” while the family was still mourning.

Monarchs are born and aligned by tradition, not voted or politically appointed. The succession line and the late Omukama's will must be respected.

The dispute has unfolded alongside a separate disagreement over security at the royal palace.

Queen Mother Best Kemigisa said royal guards had been withdrawn from the palace and soldiers deployed there. She said the move had restricted the royal family’s movement and ability to receive visitors, describing the situation as “house arrest”.

She appealed to the army leadership and President Museveni to allow the family to mourn and bury Oyo in peace.

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces denied the allegation on Friday.

In a statement issued by Acting Director of Defence Public Information Chris Magezi, the UPDF said it had not withdrawn the Tooro Royal Guards and had not placed the royal family under house arrest.

“The UPDF has not withdrawn the Tooro Royal Guards,” the army said.

It referred to a statement attributed to the Queen Mother dated Sept. 10, 2026, saying it was issued to clarify the army’s position.

“Certainly, it is also not true that the residents of the Royal Palace are under lockdown or house arrest as suggested,” the UPDF stated.

The army said security had instead been reinforced because of the scale of the events surrounding the king’s death and burial, citing threats along Uganda’s border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.

It also said it remained uninvolved in the kingdom’s succession process.

The dispute leaves Tooro facing a contested transition as preparations continue to honour a king who spent most of his life on the throne.
