Nigerian actor John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, passed away at 62 in a Lagos hospital on Saturday. Emeka Rollas, the President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, confirmed the news on social media, citing cardiac arrest as the cause.
Mr Ibu had been grappling with health issues, including blood clotting in his leg, leading to its amputation in November 2023. Despite efforts and financial support, he faced challenges flying overseas for additional therapy due to medical restrictions.
The ABS Foundation and numerous well-wishers contributed to Mr Ibu’s medical expenses. However, the actor’s health deteriorated, and he returned home a month later. Colleague Ken Erics visited him in January 2024, sharing a video on Instagram, offering a glimpse into Mr Ibu’s final moments.
The Enugu-born actor had a prolific career, starring in over 200 Nollywood films, including “Mr Ibu,” “Coffin Producers,” “Husband Suppliers,” and “International Players.” His contribution to the industry leaves a lasting legacy.
