Paris Saint-Germain opened the new season the same way they ended the last — by winning. The European champions came from behind to beat Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 on penalties Wednesday in the UEFA Super Cup, after rescuing a 2-2 draw in stoppage time.
The match, played at Stadio Friuli in Udine, Italy, pitted last season’s Champions League winners against the Europa League champions. For much of the night, it looked like Tottenham — in their first competitive outing under new manager Thomas Frank — would be the ones lifting silverware.
Micky van de Ven put the North London club ahead in the 39th minute, and Cristian Romero doubled the lead three minutes into the second half. Spurs held that advantage until the 85th minute, when PSG substitute Lee Kang-in pulled a goal back. In the fourth minute of stoppage time, Gonçalo Ramos headed in the equalizer, forcing the shootout.
The penalties began poorly for PSG, with Vitinha firing wide. But new goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier stopped Van de Ven’s attempt, and Tottenham’s Mathys Tel missed. That opened the door for Nuno Mendes, who converted the decisive spot kick.
Tottenham’s Dominic Solanke, Rodrigo Bentancur and Pedro Porro scored their penalties. PSG’s Ramos, Ousmane Dembélé and Lee also found the net before Mendes sealed it.
The win marks PSG’s first Super Cup triumph — and the first for any French club in the competition’s history. It is also their fifth trophy of 2025, just a month after losing the FIFA Club World Cup final to Chelsea.
For Frank, who left Brentford to take the Spurs job after Ange Postecoglou’s dismissal, the performance showed promise despite the late collapse. “Very proud of the players, the club, the team,” he said afterward. “They gave everything, played against one of the best in the world. 75-80 minutes gave away nothing against a team with four players with incredible individual talent.”
PSG will now turn to domestic matters, opening their Ligue 1 title defense Sunday away to Nantes. They won the French league last season by 19 points over Marseille. Tottenham begin their Premier League campaign at home Saturday against newly promoted Burnley.
