Tyla Laura Seethal, known as Tyla, won the inaugural Best African Music Performance Grammy for her hit ‘Water’, marking her first Grammy win. Signed with Epic Records in 2021, the Johannesburg native gained attention with her debut single ‘Getting Late’ featuring Kooldrink.
The category was introduced for the 66th Grammy Awards, held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on February 5, as part of updates to enhance fairness and transparency. Tyla beat out competitors like Burna Boy and Davido to claim the prize.
In her acceptance speech, Tyla expressed gratitude to God, her team, and her family, especially her tearful mother. Burna Boy, despite leading Africa’s nominations with four nods, left empty-handed, losing in multiple categories including Best Global Music Performance and Best Global Album.
During the ceremony, Burna Boy performed a medley of his songs alongside Brandy and 21 Savage. Other Nigerian Afrobeats artists also missed out on wins in their nominated categories.
