Four Ebola cases have been confirmed in Uganda over the last 24 hours, bringing the number to 11, the health ministry said Friday.
KAMPALA | LIFESTYLE UGANDA (http://lifestyleuganda.com/) — The health ministry said Friday that Uganda has recorded four confirmed cases of Ebola in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 11.
“Probable cases” are considered to be those who have died from suspected EVD (ebola) and had an epidemiological relationship to a confirmed case but were not tested.
Additionally, positive lab results are considered “confirmed cases” by the Uganda health ministry.
In a tweet shared by the Ugandan Health Ministry, 25 patients were admitted to a health facility in Mubende district, where the outbreak has been detected, according to the ministry. The ministry also reported that six cases had been confirmed to be infected, while 19 others were suspected of being infected.
Ministry officials said they had traced 58 contacts of the confirmed cases in order to provide more details on how the disease spread.
Following the detection of a rare Sudan strain of Ebola in Uganda on Tuesday, Uganda declared an outbreak. An Ebola-related fatality was a 1-year-old child, who died in the Mubende district. One of the probable casualties was a 24-year-old man. Health officials earlier announced that one of the probable Ebola-related casualties was a 24-year-old man.
It has been found that the Ervebo vaccine (rVSV-ZEBOV) is effective in protecting against the Zaire strain of the Ebola virus. However, vaccination against the rare Sudan strain has not been tested for effectiveness.
In Uganda, four Ebola outbreaks have occurred. The most deadly was in 2000 when over 200 people died. Uganda borders the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which is experiencing an Ebola resurgence.
