Ademola Lookman, recently crowned African Player of the Year, is crediting a lot of his success to his time at Atalanta. At 27, he’s had a career full of ups and downs, but this latest achievement at the CAF Awards in Marrakech cements his place among Africa’s footballing greats.

Beating out tough competition like Achraf Hakimi and Simon Adingra, Lookman’s year was marked by standout performances, including a Europa League final hat-trick that brought Atalanta their first European trophy. He even ranked 14th in the 2024 Ballon d’Or standings, an incredible feat for a player who once struggled to find his footing in the English Premier League.

Reflecting on his journey from Charlton Athletic to Everton, then to Bundesliga side RB Leipzig, and now Serie A, Lookman told Flashscore how Atalanta gave him the right environment to thrive. “It’s timing, belief, and the support I’ve had,” he said, emphasizing how blessed he feels to have reached this level.

Things weren’t always smooth for Lookman. He had a tough time at Fulham, especially after missing a Panenka penalty in 2020, a moment that could’ve defined his career negatively. Instead, it became a turning point. “It’s about turning pain into power,” he said, thanking coach Scott Parker for helping him grow from that experience.

Joining Atalanta for €15 million was the best decision he made. The move didn’t just elevate his club career—it gave him a bigger platform in the Nigeria national team, where he’s now one of their top players. He helped Nigeria to the Africa Cup of Nations final this year, scoring crucial goals along the way.

Lookman is also sending a message to young players: “Life may knock you down, but it’s about how you rise again.” As the sixth Nigerian to win this award, he’s carrying on a legacy started by greats like Nwankwo Kanu and Victor Osimhen.

Up next for Lookman? Leading Atalanta in the Coppa Italia and Serie A, where they’re currently on top of the table, two points ahead of Napoli. It’s safe to say his story is far from over.
