Kampala Queens have been crowned champions of the 2024/25 Finance Trust Bank Fufa Women Super League – securing the title for the second time in the club’s history.
The “Queens of Soccer”, who first lifted the trophy in 2022/23, reclaimed their crown with a commanding season that saw them finish four points clear of rivals Kawempe Muslim, the league’s record champions.
Originally formed after Fufa president Moses Magogo acquired Gaddafi Integrated Academy in 2016, Kampala Queens have since grown into a powerhouse in Ugandan women’s football.
Their latest triumph came off the back of a strong campaign in which they lost just once in 22 matches, winning 14 and drawing seven under the guidance of two coaches. Charles Ayiekoh began the season at the helm before Ethiopian Firew Asefa Hailegebreal took over midway through the first round.
They ended the season on 49 points, scoring 35 goals and conceding just seven – a league-best defensive record. That form secured them a spot at the forthcoming Cecafa Zone qualifiers for the CAF Women’s Champions League.
Midfielder Shamirah Nalugya was at the heart of their success. The Uganda international finished as the club’s top scorer with nine goals – including a penalty in the 1-1 draw against She Maroons on the final day – and was named the league’s Most Valuable Player.
She edged out teammate Zainah Nandede, Fufa’s Women’s Player of the Year for 2024, who also impressed with eight goals despite starting the last game at right-back. Goalkeeper Daisy Nakaziro also made a strong case for the MVP award after keeping 15 clean sheets.
Despite a dip in form at the tail end of the campaign – with four games without a win – Kampala Queens had already done enough to seal the title. The mood remained celebratory as the team received the newly-unveiled league trophy from former player Lukia Namubiru, with Fufa’s third deputy president Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi and Finance Trust Bank officials presiding over the ceremony.
With the domestic crown secured, the focus now shifts to the regional stage as Kampala Queens prepare to represent Uganda in continental competition once more.
