Ugandan singer-politician Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, is at the centre of a storm in the East African nation after he successfully submitted 33,000 signatures to the Electoral Commission ahead of his presidency.

  • He gathered 33,000 signatures not to exceed the deadline and that NUP has submitted them.
  • Presidential candidates will be nominated on November 2, 2020, according to EC guidelines.
  • Visit the Lifestyle Uganda homepage for more stories on National Unity Platform.

The 36-year-old said he wanted to use the politically charged songs to bring about change in the country that President Yoweri Museveni has led for more than three decades.

On Wednesday, October 14, 2020, Police raided the offices of the National Unity Party (NUP) in Kamwokya and were reportedly searching through election documents. The NUP was holding a meeting of some of its top leaders when the police arrived that day.

“The military, police and other security forces have cordoned off the National Unity Platform offices in Kamwokya. Many of our employees and leaders have been arrested. They go into different offices and take all the documents and other valuables, ”said NUP leader Kyagulanyi.

The National Unity Platform (NUP) later confirmed that a number of documents and materials had been confiscated today from their offices in Kamwokya. The NUP later confirmed that some documents and items were confiscated from its offices in Kamwokya by security.

The party said documents needed to nominate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu as the party’s presidential candidate, including CCTV camera monitors and collected signatures, had been taken.

The spokesman Joel Senyonyi told reporters on Wednesday, October 14, 2020, that they had mobilized across the country to begin collecting new signatures as they demanded the confiscation of their files.

Bobi Wine now has in a tweet announced that he has collected 33,000 signatures in two days and that NUP has submitted them fully to beat the deadline for the electoral commission.

THANK YOU all Ugandans who responded to our call for fresh signatures after the military & police raided our office & took the millions of signatures we had collected for 2 months. According to the Presidential Election Act 2005, a candidate needs at least 9800 signatures from 98 districts to run for the presidency. Lastly, all candidates will be nominated on November 2, 2020, according to Election Commission guidelines.
