African pop sensations like Nigeria’s Asake and Rema, South Africa’s Tyla, and Ghana’s King Promise are making waves, landing nominations for next year’s Music of Black Origin (MOBO) Awards. The event, which celebrates Black music and culture, will take place in Newcastle, UK, this February.
Since its start in 1996, the MOBOs have been a major platform for recognizing talent across genres like Afrobeats, hip-hop, R&B, grime, drill, EDM, jazz, and more. This year, Asake, Rema, Tyla, and King Promise are all up for the Best African Music Act award. They’re joined by fellow African stars Ayra Starr, Bnxn & Ruger, Odumodublvck, Shallipopi, Tems (all from Nigeria), and Uncle Waffles from South Africa. Asake, who snagged the award last year, could very well go back-to-back.
But that’s not all. Asake, Ayra Starr, Tems, and Tyla have also made it into the Best International Act category, where they’ll be up against heavy hitters like Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, Megan Thee Stallion, and Nicki Minaj.
On the gospel side, Nigeria’s Limoblaze is vying for the Best Gospel Act award.
This year’s frontrunners, though, are UK stars Jorja Smith, Sampha, Cleo Sol, Ghetts, and Central Cee, each racking up three nominations.
Kanya King, the visionary behind the MOBOs, shared her excitement:
“Each and every time we unveil the MOBO Awards nominations, I am taken aback by the sheer amount of incredible talent we have in the UK. It inspires us all to continue pushing the industry to be more inclusive of a greater variety of Black music and culture. The music coming out of the UK this past year has been some of the best we have had in years. These distinct, uncompromising voices – across different genres from R&B and soul to grime, hip hop to jazz and alternative – are not just soundtracks for our days. They provide healing and reflection, and also escapism in times of need.”
She also gave a nod to the MOBO UnSung program, which shines a spotlight on emerging talent. “For several years now we have also seen the growth of our MOBO UnSung talent programme, as it continues to be a beacon for spotlighting and empowering emerging artists. Some of the artists tipped by UnSung have gone on to achieve great things and we’re so proud to be following their journey, and celebrating their success. A huge congratulations to all our nominees across music, film and television, and entertainment. We look forward to welcoming you in Newcastle.”
Big congrats to all the nominees, spanning music, film, TV, and entertainment. We can’t wait to see them take the stage in Newcastle!
