Ayra Starr and Tyla are in BBC Radio 1’s Sound Of 2024 longlist, an annual poll highlighting emerging music talent. The list, initiated in 2003, is curated by 149 music experts and aims to identify promising artists.
Ayra Starr and Tyla, both 21, are among the 10 acts in the longlist, leading to a ranked shortlist and the winner’s announcement on January 5, 2024, on Radio 1. Radio 1’s head of music, Chris Price, expressed optimism about the diversity in the list, anticipating a great year for new music.
Ayra Starr, signed to Mavin Records, is one of Nigeria’s highly streamed female artists. Tyla, known for ‘Water,’ recently achieved a historic No. 10 spot on the Billboard Hot 100. Both artists are also Grammy nominees in the newly introduced Best African Performance category.
Last year’s winner was British group FLO, following a tradition that includes past winners like Adele and Sam Smith.
