Uganda has several hospital dental departments and private clinics offering services ranging from routine check-ups and tooth extractions to orthodontics, root canal treatment and dental implants.
Among the facilities providing dental care are UMC Victoria Hospital, Mengo Hospital’s Ken Chapman Dental Center of Excellence, Uriel Dental Clinic, PrimeCare Dental Clinic, Sterling Dental Clinic and Code Clinic. Their services and settings differ, making the choice dependent on the treatment required and the patient’s circumstances.
There is no established national ranking in the available information that identifies one facility as Uganda’s best dental hospital. Patients should compare available services, the qualifications of dental professionals, treatment costs and referral arrangements before choosing a provider.
Hospital-based dental services
UMC Victoria Hospital in Kampala provides dental care within a multispecialty hospital setting. Its published services include treatment for common dental conditions and sedation for selected procedures, alongside care before and after treatment.
Mengo Hospital also has an established dental department. According to the hospital, its dental clinic opened in March 1980 under the leadership of Dr Ken Chapman.
The department has since expanded beyond its original facilities and now provides clinical services while supporting dental training. Mengo Hospital has also announced plans for a new dental centre named in Chapman’s honour, with a fundraising drive launched in 2025 to support the project.
Hospital-based services may be worth considering when a patient requires coordination with other medical specialists. However, the appropriate setting depends on the complexity of the condition and the services available at the time of treatment.
Private clinics offer specialised treatments
Several private dental practices in Kampala advertise services covering preventive care, restorative procedures and cosmetic dentistry.
Uriel Dental Clinic, located in Bukoto, lists root canal treatment, braces, clear aligners, gum disease treatment, children’s dentistry, teeth whitening, veneers and dental implants among its services. Its published opening hours are Monday to Saturday, with the clinic closed on Sundays.
PrimeCare Dental Clinic provides general, orthodontic and family dentistry. The clinic also advertises emergency dental care and says it operates throughout the week, including weekends and public holidays.
Sterling Dental Clinic, located at Garden City Mall in Kampala, lists dental implants, implant-supported bridges, full-arch restoration and bone grafting among its services. The clinic says it has served patients in Kampala since 1997.
Code Clinic, based on Kiira Road in Kamwokya, offers preventive and general dentistry, root canal treatment, dental implants, clear aligners, teeth whitening and children’s dental care. The practice also highlights its approach to patients who experience anxiety about dental treatment.
These service descriptions are published by the clinics themselves and do not constitute an independent assessment of their clinical outcomes or overall quality.
What patients should consider
The choice of a dental facility should reflect the treatment required rather than its promotional claims or online ratings alone.
Patients considering complex procedures, including implants or oral surgery, should ask about the dentist’s relevant training, the proposed treatment plan, possible complications, follow-up care and the total cost.
Insurance coverage should also be confirmed directly with the provider before treatment begins. Uriel Dental Clinic, for example, states on its website that it does not accept dental insurance plans.
For patients with underlying medical conditions or those requiring more complex treatment, it may be useful to establish whether the facility can provide the necessary medical support or refer them to an appropriate specialist.
The available information identifies several providers offering a range of dental services in Uganda, but it does not establish which has the highest success rates or the best overall patient outcomes. Independent clinical evidence and verified patient-outcome data would be needed to make that comparison.
